Back at T-U-F-T-S

Hi all,

A quick update; I am back up at school and have just finished the first week of classes. I have a 4-day schedule, which I am really excited about. 3-day weekends all semester for me! I'll probably end up needing them in light of my big scary senior design project which will be the 800 lb gorilla of this term. I am most likely going to be working on a design for a portable Lego storage/table unit, and if we are lucky enough, our design might actually get built! Apart from senior design, I am taking Applied Thermodynamics, Biomaterials, and an astronomy class called "Galaxies and the Universe."

I am living in West Hall again, but this time in a single room on the third floor. It's good, but not as good as having a full en suite bathroom to myself in central London. It will be a change getting used to being back in Boston and at Tufts, but seeing friends I haven't seen in very long will make it worth the while. I am getting my tutoring job back at TLC, and I very well may be travelling to local middle schools to help kids out in Math; I might even get a raise to $12.50/hr this year!

Fall Ball was last night, though it seems to get more boring each year... hopefully more exciting events will follow.

It's raining right now... Yay Boston late summer weather.

I am lazy

Sorry, nothing much has been going on for me this summer :/

I will try to get back into this when I have something interesting to talk about.

Until then,

Blog Reboot

Hey faithful readers,

Since I am no longer in London, I have decided to do a bit of reshuffling with my blog's layout, title, and overall objective. It will continue to be about what's new with me, stories that I come across that I want to share with you, or whatever else I feel like putting up.

I'm not exactly sure what I want to call it yet ("Nick in London" is now officially dead). I did come up with one thing that seemed to roll off the tongue pretty well; I welcome any comments or suggestions if you think it totally sucks.

As of right now, I am home, still unemployed, but searching. I have begun to help my dad sell some stuff on eBay. I reeeeeeally need to go for a run, but I'm afraid of messing with my foot that I hurt a few weeks ago. I hope the weather clears up soon.

I went to see "The Hangover" a couple of days ago. I thought it was pretty decent, but not spectacular. I look forward to Transformers 2 coming out Wednesday. What irks me is that if I were still in the UK, I could have seen it on Friday. What gives? It's an American movie!

Until I find something new to rant about,

Home in CT

I am now back home in the great state of Connecticut. Seeing family is great, but boredom follows. Nothing else to report.

Final days...

Update: A union of underground drivers is striking today (see picture above); only about 40% of tube trains are running.

It seems the whole past year has slipped by me; I can hardly believe I'll be home by Saturday night. It really has been a blast these past couple of weeks (aside from a surprise project presentation). I have been spending some much-deserved fun time with my friends here without the worry of exams--including dinners, going to the usual clubs and pubs, and bigger events at fabric and matter. I don't think there has been a day this week where I've been up before noon... oops! I think it will be a good thing to be home, a welcomed come-down from all of this, though I will miss everyone terribly that I'll be leaving behind in London (those of you who are reading this staying behind, I will follow up with a more personal good-bye later on). I'm pretty sure the exams (apart from 1 really abysmal one) went well; I'll have to wait until July to see those grades.

But still, good heavens, where has the time gone! I haven't even started packing up yet!

Thorpe Park

Yesterday, about 14 people from JD went out for a day of amusement at Thorpe Park, a smallish theme park about 30 minutes southwest of London by train in a town called Staines. For those of you from New England, it is about halfway between the size of Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT, and Six Flags New England in Agawam, MA. It has a few gems, including a brand new ride based on the Saw movies. There is also the first roller coaster in the world to contain 10 full loops, Colossus. It was hot, so the obligatory boat-plunging-into-water ride was in order. There is also a crazy ride called Stealth, which basically launches you from 0 to 80 mph in 1.8 seconds, and then up and down a vertical climb; it's all over in about 20 seconds. All in all, it was a fun day out; everyone was tired and sunburned by the end, and quite full of junk food. Mission successful.

My time here grows thin... :(

Cheerios,

Farewell Gunners

I just went to the last Premier League game of the season at Emirates Stadium, final score Arsenal 4 - 1 Stoke City. It was good to end on a high note despite having a disappointing finish to the FA Cup and Champions League races. I've really enjoyed going to these games and it will be one thing I definitely miss about being here in London. Oh well, that's what online streaming programs are for!

It's exam time.

Sorry I have been very lazy with the updates lately, but not much else is happening lately other than lots of studying and exam-taking. If something awesome otherwise happens, you will hear it here first.

Also, go see Star Trek. Saw it in IMAX. Amazing.

Only 2 More Days!

Well friends, it has been a simply amazing (yet expensive) experience thus far in Japan. In the last 3 days since I last wrote a long post, we have gone to Shibuya, Harajuku, Akihabara, an Onsen, Ueno Park, Imperial Palace, Diet Building, Yokohama, took the train to Kyoto to see various shrines, took a day trip to Nara Park and Naramachi, visited Osaka castle, came back to Kyoto and visited the Golden Temple and the Gion district where there were many more people having "hana-bi" and are now preparing to go back to Tokyo for the final day tomorrow. I can't wait to post all of the pictures I have taken; I regret to inform you the autofocus has stopped working in my camera, but that just means I'll have to be more selective about the photos I am taking.

Until next time,

ニック

Internet is scarce

Hey all,

Just letting you know I'm in Kyoto now and internet is hard to find. I'm typing this from a Japanese internet cafe where the keyboard is really really hard to use. I will post an update later about my progress. Last day in Tokyo was amazing; we went to Yokohama and went up the fastest lift in the world (70 floors in 40 seconds!) The view was amazing. Having a blast so far, will talk later. Arrrrgh stupid keyboard, it keeps typing kana instead of english letters.

Peace

Konnichiwa from Tokyo!

Adam and I have safely arrived in Tokyo for those of you who'd like to know. Unfortunately, due to Air France's douchebaggery, we were 10 hours late. It's not so bad since we are mostly on schedule with what we wanted to do anyway.

We woke up extremely early (6 AM) to go to the Tsukiji fish market, which is the largest, and arguably, most frantic early morning fish market in the world. We were almost killed by people riding around on these small utility vehicles pulling all sorts of goods around with no apparent traffic laws. We spent time walking around looking at the fresh, and in some cases, live catches of the morning. We had sushi for breakfast at a nearby sushi bar adjacent to the Tsukiji area. Even at the early hour of 7 were there people lined up to get into these places; it was definitely worth the wait, but maybe not the roughly $21 each we paid for the meal (it was quite delicious and filling nonetheless).

Later on we met up in Shibuya (a HUGE pedestrian crossing, like Times Square) with Alex, a friend from Tufts, and we roamed the areas around where she lives in Tokyo... Shibuya, Harajuku, Yoyogi park, the Meiji Shrine, and Roppongi Hills. We left her because she had things to do in the afternoon, and Adam and I visited Tokyo Tower.

We definitely got here at the perfect time. The "sakura" (cherry blossoms) are in full bloom and the parks are full of Japanese people engaging in "hana-bi," a cultural tradition which is basically an excuse to go out to the park, sit under the blossoming trees to eat food, and get drunk on sake.

Everyone around is dressed in pants and long sleeves, but some points today, the weather seemed pretty hot and humid -- definitely shorts and T-shirt weather. No one seemed to mind the heat except for us. Maybe that is because we are "gaijin" (foreigners) who are not used to the climate here.

In general, Tokyo is one of the cleanest, most efficient, ultramodern, and apparently safest (people don't even lock their bicycles!) cities in the world. The rail system is something to behold. It's damn near perfect in its speed and ease of use. It was a bit overwhelming at first to get our bearings straight--a map is quite useful, but I think we are beginning to find our feet, even though they are already quite tired from the walking we've done. My knowledge of Japanese, or what remains of it from being out of practice, has been useful thus far as most people only know a small amount of very basic English. It has been easier just to attempt the conversation in Japanese, because the people seem grateful knowing you are making an effort for them and will treat you better.

We are taking a rest now, but tonight we will visit Akihabara, the famed electronics and anime center of Tokyo, and perhaps some of the bars and clubs in Roppongi. Tomorrow we've reworked to explore the area around the Imperial Palace, Tokyo Harbor, an Onsen (volcanic hot spring), and maybe Yokohama, if we are able to make it that far. As for the rest of our stay, we are going west via Shinkansen (bullet train) to the Kansai cities of Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka. We will return to Tokyo for another day after visiting the Kansai region, just before returning to the Airport for our late-night departure back to the states.

Our schedule is ambitious, but this is only meant to be a first experience in Japan for both of us. I can't wait to come back when I'll have more money, time, and knowledge to help myself get around. Sorry I haven't got pictures yet, but they will come soon (probably after I come back to London), I promise!

Kanpai! (Cheers!)

London Eye

Not much to explain here. Sarah Keefe and Kendall came to visit, and we found an excuse to do something tourist-y. Here are pictures:

Nickは日本に行くよていです! (Nick is going to Japan!)

Well friends,

It's finally happening. I've waited most of my young adult life longing to visit the Land of the Rising Sun, and I am scheduled to depart London City Airport for Tokyo on April 2, 2009, returning April 10, 2009. Adam and I found a flight for around £450 and decided to seize the opportunity. It still does not seem real to me that I am actually going to Japan for Easter break, but it will soon enough. Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara are on my list of things to do over the 6 full days we have to spend there.

I will no doubt get to visit more of Europe in due course, but I couldn't let this opportunity pass me by. I better go brush up on my language skills! Ganbarimasu!

:D

Paris!

Hey everyone,

We went to Paris yesterday (for the day). We took the first train there at 5:26AM and the last train back at 8:50PM. We saw lots including Notre Dame, The Louvre, The Eiffel Tower, The Arc de Triomphe, and a bunch of other French things. I have pictures to share if you click this link:

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2111682&id=1711138&l=d6280

We took the Eurostar, which is a really, really fast train that goes through the Channel Tunnel ("Chunnel") from the UK to France. We made it there in only 2.5 hours. See video below for comparision of speed (186mph) with that of cars on the highway alongside going 70mph.

We also went to see Wicked tonight in the West End, which was a lot of fun for those who haven't seen it. That's it for now!

Football Hooligans

Today was an eventful day. I went to one lecture, then dashed back to King's Cross to pick up my family and guide them to Victoria to catch a train down to Carshalton to visit our relatives who happen to live just south of London (family of my Dad's 1st cousin, once removed--so my grandfather's cousin's family--long story short).

I stayed a few, but had to leave because I had tickets to the FA Cup game between Arsenal and Cardiff City. This wasn't a Premier League game per se, but it was still awesome. I was somehow able to find very nice club level seats for face value (£45) that included access to a sweet bar and free drinks at halftime. I think it had something to do with the fact that this was a replay game, since no one could score the first time around.

I guess having gone to a couple games now and starting to follow the team on their video podcast (vodcast?), I have become an aspiring "Gooner" [meaning Gunner, or Arsenal fan]. I bought my own scarf to twirl around at the game tonight. Also, funnily enough, I'm going to go see the Arsenal's fiercest rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, play Middlesborough in a couple of weeks, but that is only because Tufts is subsidizing it. Think of it like a Yankees fan going Fenway to see the Red Sox play some team that isn't the Yankees. Into the house of the enemy. Here are some pictures care of my phone. Enjoy!

Called the Gunners for a Reason

Nearly Full Stadium

Free Drinks = Awesome

Tomorrow will be the London sightseeing day for the family--British Museum, Thameswalk, and then whatever else we decide to do.

Cheers.
